In a strong validation of its AI-driven approach to urban energy planning, Urbio secured the Audience Award at the latest Smart Energy Event, winning over a room of ~180 specialized industry experts.
Since its launch in 2011, the Smart Energy Event has served as a critical nexus for the Swiss energy sector. Organized by The Ark Foundation and CleantechAlps, and hosted at the Energypolis Campus in Sion, the conference annually gathers decision-makers, district heating experts, grid engineers, energy distributors, and R&D managers to discuss the evolving energy landscape.
During the 2023 edition, the organizers introduced the inaugural Smart Energy Start-up Pitch Contest to highlight the country's most promising solutions. Presenting to a highly technical audience of domain experts, Urbio focused its pitch on a critical industry bottleneck: the fragmented nature of infrastructure data - and how to reconcile the data to design optimized energy systems.
Urbio demonstrated how its platform acts as a "Google Maps of energy," utilizing artificial intelligence to clean, centralize, and visualize complex local data sets. For the engineers and public authorities in the room tasked with projects like district heating network planning, this transparent, visual approach clearly resonated, earning the startup the coveted audience vote.
The Pitch That Won the Room
Presenting to a room full of domain experts, Urbio focused on a critical bottleneck plaguing utilities and engineering consultancies: the highly fragmented nature of infrastructure data.
The winning pitch demonstrated how its platform acts as a "Google Maps of energy." By leveraging artificial intelligence to clean, centralize, and visualize complex local data sets, Urbio showcased a clear pathway to dramatically reduce the time energy engineers spend on manual data structuring.
For industry professionals tasked with complex infrastructure projects, such as district heating network planning, this centralized approach resonated strongly. The audience's vote reflected a clear market demand for robust, transparent, and highly visual digital infrastructure tools.
Industry Validation and European Expansion
For the Urbio team, the Smart Energy Audience Award is more than just a trophy; it is a vital indicator of market alignment.
“The opportunity to pitch to a room full of experts is always a rewarding exercise,” noted Sébastien Cajot, co-founder and CEO of Urbio. By securing the audience's vote, the company has not only confirmed its status as a major player in the energy transition but also strengthened its ties with essential industry and media partners.
The startup, now comprising around 20 specialists, is using this momentum to fuel its European expansion. Urbio is already deployed by major Swiss energy players—including OIKEN, Romande Energie, Groupe E, and CKW—and is actively growing its customer base in Germany and Belgium.
Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, Urbio is scaling its product and commercial teams. “We are continuing to expand our commercial activities in Europe, and are working on new functionalities linked to artificial intelligence and generative design,” Cajot explained. “We are determined to consolidate our position as a leader in urban energy planning.”
(Note for early-stage innovators: As urban energy challenges continue to grow, initiatives like the Smart Energy Event offer a vital platform for start-ups. The next edition is scheduled for August 30, 2024, with pitch contest applications open until June 7 at eventsmartenergy.ch/pitch-contest).
